April meeting

Members of Northwold WI met in April to complete arrangements for their exhibit in the Colonel Cator Challenge award held at the weekend on the Norfolk showground. Out of 43 entries our exhibit gained just 11 points less than the overall winner. A big thank you for the delightful item's contributed and displayed by the makers.
The recent Group meeting at Thetford, was enjoyed by all. Alan Barson (a Basil Faulty clone?) gave a hilarious talk on lawn maintenance. Whether we ladies will be out there following his instructions is another matter. Our President was happy when her entry in the Garden photo competition was placed second.
The theme of our Carnival float was agreed and various outings discussed.
Mrs Shelia James our guest speaker was then welcomed. She is a Pearly Queen and was wearing one of her

two traditional costumes. Each  pearly costume is covered in buttons, but not the old pearl buttons which are much too dear now and the design has a theme and story appropriate to your own family , when worn they are very heavy.
Pearly Kings and Queens can trace their history back to an orphan boy working on market stalls in the 1870's. His efforts to help others in the same circumstances as himself found the admiration of the other stall holders, or costers who decided to help the young and so the tradition of the Pearly Kings & Queens was started and is now recognised throughout the world raising many thousands of pounds for Charity. The statue of the founder which has been vandalised, is now in the church of St Martins in the Fields near Trafalgar Square where it will stay when it has been repaired.
The competition for a buttoned item was won by Barbara Booty. Refreshments were supplied by Jo- Ann Kydd and Mitch Hodges ably assisted by Peggy Clear and Pauline Cundy.

The speaker at the May meeting on May 13th will be Mrs Patricia Fields
Who will be character reading from our tree drawings, this should be an interesting evening and visitors are very welcome as usual.
